Decorative Oil Gilding with Roger Newton 6th November 2026
This is a one day introduction into gilding aimed at beginners (although those with more experience are also welcome!), focusing on decorative oil gilding, with my Father, Master Gilder Roger Newton.
You will learn the difference between pure gold leaf and Dutch metal (which my Father has huge opinions about the inferiority of!) and the difference between loose leaf and transfer leaf as well as how to handle them.
We will guide you through the tools and equipment used in gilding and the correct procedure for preparing a surface to be gilded.
You will become knowledgeable on the different sizes (adhesive) available and how to apply them.
You will then have hands on experience gilding different surfaces including a shell, a walnut and, most importantly, painted furniture to enable you to add an incredible decorative effect to any surface.
This is a stand-alone workshop and is not part of our 3 day gilding course which focuses primarily on traditional water gilding.
Included in the fee is an allocation of gold leaf for the projects. More will be available to purchase should you wish to take some home or experiment more during the day.
Homemade and, where possible, locally sourced lunch and tea included.
